Campus areas

The Helsinki Region hosts four active campuses relevant to life sciences: the bioscience campus at Viikki, the biomedicine campus at Meilahti, the technology campus at Otaniemi, and the natural sciences campus at Kumpula.

Helsinki University

The University of Helsinki (UH) is the largest university in Finland with about 38,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 480 professors. The university is divided into 11 faculties and several institutions.

Biocentrum Helsinki is an umbrella organisation at the University of Helsinki with more than 20 research groups focused in biosciences. Located in both Viikki and Meilahti campuses, Biocentrum Helsinki conducts scientific research in the fields of biotechnology and molecular biology and provides joint graduate training programs.

Helsinki University of Technology

Helsinki University of Technology (HUT) is located in Otaniemi, Espoo. It is the largest technical university in Finland with about 15,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and 250 professors. The university is divided into 12 departments and several institutions.

Bioscience campus at Viikki (UH)

The Faculties of Agriculture and Forestry, Biosciences and Pharmacy of Helsinki University are located in the Viikki bioscience campus. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine will move to Viikki later. The Institute of Biotechnology, Viikki Biocentre, Neuroscience Centre, Viikki Drug Discovery Technology Center and Viikki Food Centre are also based in Viikki. Helsinki University, Viikki campus

Medical campus at Meilahti (UH)

The Faculty of Medicine of Helsinki University is located in the medical campus at Meilahti. The Helsinki University Central Hospital is located in the same area. The Biomedicum Helsinki, centre for medical research and training, provides facilities for about a thousand medical experts.

The research centres Haartman Institute, HYKS-Institute, Finnish Genome Center, Technomedicum, National Biological NMR Centre and the units of National Public Health Institute and Folkhälsan are also based at Meilahti. Helsinki University, Meilahti campus

Natural Science campus in Kumpula (UH)

The Kumpula campus comprises Helsinki University´s Faculties of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The recently opened LUMA centre serves as a centre for education, research, development and co-operation in the fields of biology, physics, chemistry, geography, mathematics and computer science. Moreover, the independent institutes, the Helsinki Institute of Physics, the Finnish Institute for the Verification of Chemical Weapons Convention and the Institute of Seismology are based in Kumpula. Technology campus in Otaniemi (HUT)

The Technology campus in Otaniemi, the home of Helsinki University of Technology, is the largest technology campus in the Nordic countries. The Otaniemi Campus is engaged in scientific research, provides tertiary education combined with research, and promotes scientific and artistic development. In addition, Helsinki University of Technology has many life science and biotechnology-focused institutions and research institutes, such as the Low Temperature Laboratory, Centre for New Materials, HUT Centrum for Neurosystems, Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Research Institute for Health Care Facilities, Technomedicum, Helsinki Institute of Information Technology (HIIT) and BioMag Laboratory.

Technopolis Ventures (Otaniemi Science Park) functions as an incubator and a business generator in the campus area. CSC Scientific Computing centre and VTT Technical Research Center of Finland are based in Otaniemi. The new Swing Life Science Center is also located next to the Otaniemi campus.

 

Business Parks in the campus areas

Helsinki Business and Science Park Ltd (HBSP) is located in both the Viikki and Meilahti campuses in the city of Helsinki. HBSP provides development, production and marketing support services for innovations that originate from academic research, but under a business environment. One aim is to create new startup companies through the HBSP incubator system.  Existing companies, and research institutes derive a mutual benefit through HBSP. The main fields of operation are biotechnology, diagnostics and medical technologies, food technology and environmental technology.

Swing Life Science Center is a cluster of expertise in the life sciences in the Helsinki Region. Swing Life Science Center is located in Espoo, near Otaniemi campus area, and provides a dynamic business community for companies involved in state-of-the-art biotechnology, process design and technology, materials and information technology, welfare services.
