The finest expertise in science and research in Finland is found in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Over half of the internationally distinguished centres of excellence that were chosen for funding by the Academy of Finland, which finances basic research, are located in the Helsinki region. The centres of excellence in the ICT and electronics sector include the From Data to Knowledge (FDK) research unit, the Geometric Analysis and Mathematical Physics research unit, the Research Centre for Computational Science and Engineering and the Neural Networks Research Centre, to name but a few.
University of Helsinki – A Leading European University
The University of Helsinki has the widest range of disciplines in Finland. The University has 38,000 degree students and 7,400 staff. The University’s research and teaching results have been widely acclaimed. The University is involved in the work of more than half of the national Centres of Excellence in Research that are elected by international scientific panels. The University of Helsinki has been invited to become a member of the League of European Research Universities, which is a co-operation body for the leading research universities in Europe.
Otaniemi Campus – The Largest High Tech Centre in the Nordic Countries
Otaniemi has become the most important technology campus in the Nordic countries, with nearly 14,000 students, over 6,000 researchers, and technology companies employing 5,000 people. When the European Union put the Helsinki region forward as one of the most innovative areas in Europe, it justified its choice by the fact that many new and innovative technology enterprises are created in the Helsinki region and ,in particular, on the Otaniemi technology campus.
The Otaniemi-based business incubator Technopolis Ventures has also been awarded the EU’s Excellence in Technology Transfer award.
Helsinki University of Technology (HUT)
Helsinki University of Technology ,which forms the heart of the Otaniemi campus, is a scientific community with a diverse range of Finnish and international partnerships. As the country’s leading training facility for engineers and architects, as well as its most important producer of technological knowledge, the HUT has created added value for the business world in particular. Approximately half of all technology doctorates in Finland come from the Helsinki University of Technology.
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland
VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is a contract research organisation involved in many international assignments. With its 2,800 employees, VTT provides a wide range of technology and applied research services for its clients, private companies, institutions and the public sector. VTT is extensively involved in international collaboration - almost 500 public international projects every year.
VTT Research Institutes include VTT Electronics, VTT Information Technology, VTT Processes, and VTT Industrial Technology. Over the past two decades, VTT has produced some 900 patent applications, 1,700 invention disclosures and over 43,000 publications.
